MY ROLE

This past summer I was a Business Development intern at Deck Commerce, a SaaS software company headquartered in St. Louis, MO. In this role, I worked alongside the marketing and sales team to drive business development by performing a competitive analysis and nurturing strategic partnerships. 

CHALLENGE

Deck Commerce is an order management solution that helps retailers coordinate omnichannel retail orders. With the need for order management solutions growing as consumers seek out convenient and touchless shopping experiences, more and more SaaS companies are offering order management products. We have an opportunity to better understand our growing competitive landscape and to more effectively sell our  value to potential leads.

OBJECTIVE

Perform a SWOT analysis after researching 12 competitors and their order management solution. Assemble intel into company-wide resources. Present findings to the marketing and sales team and make recommendations about how to differentiate Deck Commerce's solution based on research.

THE PROCESS

1. Define goals, processes and timeline for project. Create a checklist for each competitor and calendar to track progress. 

2. Prepare a PowerPoint Deck and a SharePoint page to include updated competitive intel. Revamp existing SharePoint’s user interface to improve user experience. Create a template on SharePoint for adding a new competitor page to streamline process for the future.

3. Research each company and their order management solution, tracking relevant data in the deck and SharePoint page. Perform a SWOT analysis after analyzing data.

4. Present the deck to the marketing and sales team. Make the deck and SharePoint easily accessible company-wide.

THE RESULTS

The marketing and sales team now utilizes the deck and SharePoint page in sales proposals. My materials are also being used to train new employees and educate them about our competitive landscape.

In addition to the main competitive intel project, I identified trends and wrote a report for the CEO detailing the market impact of Direct-to-consumer wineries, one of the verticals going to be targeted in 2021. I also initiated a partner gift project to re-engage 20+ key accounts. I also provided other copywriting support and wrote a blog titled "7 Reasons to Work at a Fast-Growing Technology Company."
